For the last three years my family has made it a Christmas tradition to attend the play "The Forgotten Carols" on the night that it comes to the David O. McKay Center. This year it came on the 3rd of December. We got tickets on the day that they were first made available and were able to get tickets on the 4th row of the lower section... which is the perfect place to sit. If you have never seen the play you really are missing out! It is also now available on DVD.... which makes it possible to watch anytime!
At the beginning of the play we are introduced to the character of Constance... who is a nurse that is a work-a-holic and seems kinda bitter about the Christmas season. She is asked by the head doctor to take some time off from the hospital and to go and take care of an elderly man, whose family has gone on vacation and left him at home. After some time, she agrees to take this assignment.
The man that she is to help is named John, but he tells her that he goes by Uncle John. He then asks what her name is and she tells him Constance. He begins calling her Connie Lu. Every time she goes over to his place he has a new ornament for her to hang on the tree and a song to go with the ornament. He teaches her that everyone has a carol inside of them and you just need to look inside your heart to find yours.
I absolutely love the music that Michael McLean wrote for this play! It is just amazing! In the end Constance's attitude toward the season changes and she finds "her carol".
After the play is over, Michael comes out and performs a little bit longer. He has everyone sing the chorus of "Together Forever", which is a song that always brings tears to my eyes. I can't wait to be together with my family forever! The first year that I went with my mom and sisters was a few months after my dad passed away. When this song was played, it brought so much emotion to all of us. Since then, we have gone every year. In my opinion it really is worth spending money to see this play live.
