That's Just the Way We Roll...: November 2008

Whitney and I decided a few weeks ago that we really wanted to go to the midnight showing of Twilight. We are some of the biggest fans but were a bit skeptical about the movie... We ended up getting 8 tickets to the midnight showing at the SCERA Theater. We ended up going with Cori, Marissa, Ammon and his girlfriend Jorrie, Nathan and Kevin. I ended up liking the movie better than I thought I would. In fact... the guy who plays Edward ended up growing on me!

Every year the Intramural Department takes the winning flag football team down to Tempe, Arizona for a regional flag football tournament. For the last few years I have wanted to go down but things never worked out for me. This year I decided that no matter what I was going down there. Ammon and Whitney wanted to go down there with me and we invited my brother's friend John to go along with us and to drive down there.

Thursday...

We left Provo around 4:30 pm and made our way down to St. George. We stopped over at my brother's friend's house and stayed long enough to watch the Utah/TCU football game. While living down in St. George I fell in love with Blue Bunny ice cream and we drove around down town until we found the parlor... unfortunately it was closed for the night. We ended up stopping at Applebee's and eating dinner. After dinner we made our way down to Mesquite for the night.

Friday...

On Friday morning we left Mesquite a little after 11 am. Since Whitney has never really seen the Vegas strip the boys decided to give her a tour. We drove up and down and showed her where everything was. After the tour we stopped at In-N-Out Burger and ate lunch. After lunch we drove over to Hoover Dam and got out to explore. After exploring Hoover Dam we continued on down to Arizona. A few hours outside of Tempe John got pulled over. He got lucky and was just given a warning.

We finally arrived in Tempe, Arizona around 8 pm and couldn't wait to get out of the car. Bo told us which room he was in and we went up to go and talk to him. We ended up getting up there and then after talking for a little while we headed down the street with him to get a drink... I should have realized that he was talking about going to a liquor store... Since Whitney is under age she was not even allowed in the store but I wouldn't have wanted to go in there anyway. On our way back to the hotel we ran into a guy who asked Ammon for thirty cents so he could go and get some liquor. Ammon gave him the money and said he appreciated the honesty. After getting back from the liquor store we decided to go off and explore... plus we were getting kinda hungry. We drove over to Mill Ave. and got out to explore. Somehow the boys talked us into going to Hooters to eat. While walking over to Hooters we ran into a guy who was out trying to get money to help save the animals... He gave us all some really cool fans. Ammon is convinced that the guy was a scam artist... I guess we will never know...

Saturday...

On Saturday morning the boys had their first game of the seeding portion of the tournament. We ended up slaughtering our opponents. The next game was scheduled to be later in the afternoon... it also happened to be held during the BYU game. Instead of going and watching the boys play we ended up staying in the hotel lobby and watching BYU play. The boys ended up winning that game as well. They ended up only playing two games in the seeding portion and went into the tournament ranked number one. They had their first tournament game late Saturday afternoon... once again we slaughtered the opponent. After the last game of the evening we ended up going to a sports bar to watch some more football games. It was a very interesting experience... I guess on Saturday nights most of the sports bars card everyone. Whitney and I went in at the same time. There were two guys at the door... the guy that Whitney went to let her in right away and the guy who looked at mine kept looking at mine and then at me. Finally he let me in. Whitney and I ended up going back to the hotel early... A part of the reason for leaving early was because we felt a little uncomfortable being around people who were drinking a lot and the other reason was because of this really annoying girl that was hanging out with John. I had a really hard time being around her...

Sunday...

On Sunday we had to be out of our hotel room a few hours before the first game of the day. We decided to go and explore the ASU campus and see what they had. We ended up making our way around until we found a place that we could take pictures...

While we were out exploring the ASU campus we found the Sun Devil Stadium... We ended up being able to take a tour of the stadium. We totally fell in love with it!

Sunday games...

We were really shocked at how well the guys were doing with this tournament. All during the season back at home they were kinda struggling with winning some of the teams. We figured that they would play on Saturday and possibly make it to one game on Sunday. None of us thought that they would go as far as they did...

Sunday also started Homecoming Week there at the University. While we were there they were holding a dodge ball tournament between some of the fraternities and sororities... In between some of the games Whitney and I decided to go over and watch the tournament. We were sitting there minding our own business and laughing to ourselves about how serious some of the people were taking the game (mainly a certain girl who wasn't even playing) when some girls came and sat in front of us. They pulled out some cigarettes and started smoking. One of the girls turned and started blowing her smoke in my face... I thought it was really rude but just sat there and tried to ignore her. After getting some smoke blown in my face I started having problems breathing and experienced my first real asthma attack...

After the tournament ended the guys had a fun time getting team pictures taken... but who can really blame them after they slaughtered every team that they played against.

Trip home...

After the games were all over we stopped back at the hotel to grab some stuff from Bo and then we took off for home. We had plans to stop back in Vegas and get a room with the reward points that John had saved up and needed up use by the end of the year. We were then going to spend some time showing Whitney around Vegas and then spending the rest of the day showing her St. George. At the last moment John decided that he was tired and just wanted to go home. He then decided that we were going to go the other way home because it was supposed to be a shorter route. Once hitting Flagstaff we hit a big snow storm and having to go really slow. It ended up taking up a lot longer going that way. We finally made it home around 4:30 Monday morning.
